ABOUT US

a BRIEF HISTORY

For all that I had learned during my time in the industry nothing could have prepared me for what it was going to take to successfully run my own business.

As of 2023, I've been in the building industry for 29 years and for the last 13 years Natalie, my wife and I, owned and operated our own building company. Nat and I ran a successful business, building over 450 homes, with a client satisfaction rate of over 95% year after year as well as winning many awards and accomplishing things we might have only dreamed of, but it didn't come without its cost.

When we first started our business I had been a carpenter, supervisor and a builder, but was I a leader? Was I able to get the best out of my team, day in and day out, so that we could achieve our goals and be the best for our customers, trades and suppliers, day in and day out?

I remember after a couple of years of owning our company, standing in line at a theme park with Nat and the kids. It was one of those rare family escapes you get when you're in business for yourself. While in line I get a phone call from one of my staff telling me that they had just had a run in with another staff member, who had just stormed out of the office. It was at this stage, after dealing with all the pressure and issues that come at you in business, I thought “This just isn't worth it” and from then on I actively started to look to sell our business.

At the time, If you had asked me if I was quitting I would have said that I was just looking to do something different, but the truth was I was running away. So, after some soul searching we started to look at what it would take to have consistency of performance, results, staffing and success, without draining the life out of us. We looked into every aspect of our business and what we came to realise was that it didn't matter what our goals or desires were or what changes we made, if we didn't have the right people, teams and systems in place to run it, we were always going to struggle.

1000 Feet Deep was born out of this journey. I came to realise that I was no longer a builder of homes, but of people. It was our people that built our homes, served our customers and played a defining role in achieving our goals. My role was to ensure our team was up for the task. Taking the time to invest in and shape our culture and ensure the strength of our people revolutionised our business and created a greater capacity within our teams, enabled a willingness for change and accountability, increased productivity and forged a strong desire for innovation and improvement. But it didn’t happen by chance.

In 2022 Nat and I sold our building company to launch 1000 Feet Deep, a staff and cultural development company. A company designed to come alongside leaders to help them develop their teams so they can fulfil their dreams, without draining the life out of them.

There are no silver bullets in life, business or leadership but there are ways to make it a lot easier. Laying the proper foundations of cultural and staff development within your organisation will "Unlock the capacity of your people and unleash the potential of your organisation".
